Zhang Yuquan, an earthworm farming cooperative in Yulin, Panjin, said, "The main components of the earthworm bed are paper sludge and cow dung. Earthworms eat this and grow fast." Put aside the soil, a mass of pink earthworms is clearly visible. "These small earthworms are very capable of turning sludge into organic fertilizer, which not only solves the problems of paper mills, but also brings millions of yuan to cooperatives. It's really a big deal."

In 2009, Yulin Earthworm Aquaculture Cooperative was established, and a 120-mu, 1000-bed Earthworm Aquaculture Base, which integrates Earthworm Aquaculture, Drying and Frozen Storage, was built.

There is a large paper mill in Liaohe Estuary Eco-economic Zone. The sludge discharged from the paper mill is a good feed for earthworms. The digestive tract of earthworms is a natural organic waste treatment plant. Earthworms swallow sludge in the process of sludge treatment. The sludge enters the body of earthworms and is digested, and the earthworm manure is discharged. Yulin Earthworm Aquaculture Cooperative can digest more than 20,000 cubic meters of paper-making sludge every year, which not only reduces the cost of farming, increases the benefits, but also plays a role of green environmental protection.

Vermicular manure is an efficient biofertilizer with suitable acidity and alkalinity, water and fertilizer retention, and contains trace elements required by plants. Panjin farmers are willing to use earthworm dung as fertilizer when raising rice seedlings or planting greenhouse vegetables. The supply of earthworm manure in Yulin Earthworm Aquaculture Cooperative is always in short supply. Over the past year, Yulin Earthworm Aquaculture Cooperative has sold 62,000 cubic meters of earthworm excrement and made a profit of 1.2 million yuan.

According to Zhang Yuquan of Yulin Earthworm Aquaculture Cooperative, the green industry chain of Earthworm Aquaculture has broad market prospects and attracts a lot of attention. The medicinal value of earthworms is very high. The sun-dried earthworms are sent to pharmaceutical factories at a price of 80,000 to 100,000 yuan per ton. This year, the cooperative made a total profit of 500,000 yuan in the production of dry earthworms. Next year, Yulin Earthworm Aquaculture Cooperative will continue to expand its industrial scale and promote more farmers to raise earthworms nearby. At present, cooperatives can consume 1/4 of the sludge from paper mills. In the future, cooperatives will cultivate more earthworms and eat all the paper sludge, which will not only bring more environmental benefits, but also bring more economic returns to earthworm farmers.
